The King of Gospel Music

Rev. James Cleveland

The famous lyrics of James Cleveland songs sung by James Cleveland (Rev.)(1931-1991) was considered by many gospel enthusiasts to be the epitomy of gospel, reaching all, through the "The King of Gospel".

Born in Depression-era Chicago, the son of hard-working, God-fearing parents, Cleveland grew up in an environment where gospel flourished.

Through Dorsey's teaching and directing young James was influenced in a great way.

The style he pioneered as once spoken by Cleveland was “I’ve always maintained my own style of music, it has changed slightly over the years because I’ve tried to stay up with the times.

I prefer traditional messages and stylings because people in the church choirs can sing it. I try to make my music a source of material for churches and choirs. I play simple enough music so that even a storefront musician can pick it up”. Variously hailed as the King of Gospel Music and the Crown Prince of Gospel, the Reverend James Cleveland has combined his talents as preacher, composer, singer, producer, and philanthropist to become one of the most outstanding voices of the modern gospel sounds.
