Mahalia Jackson songs, Music By The Legendary Queen of Gospel Music

Mahalia Jackson

Mahalia Jackson songs are viewed by many as the epitome of gospel music. She began at an early age (4 years old) singing for the Lord.

Using the influential styles of such legendary singers as Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Enrico Caruso and Ma Rainey, Jackson developed her own signature style of soulful gospel music.

The third child born to John A. Jackson, a barber and preacher, and Charity Clark who died at the early age of 25, the “precious little singer” with the powerful booming voice, would later use her amazing vocal skills to spread the gospel of the Lord.

Raised by her aunt Mahalia "Duke" Paul, aunt Duke didn't allow secular music in her house. The music that was allowed to be played at her home, which was one of a Southern sanctified style, was a major influence on Mahalia’s musical talents.

Mahalia Jackson songs(1911-72), where performed in the church choir during her early childhood. Moving (1927) to Chicago, she worked at various menial jobs and sang in churches and at revival meetings, attracting attention for her vigorous, joyful gospel style.

All the while, Mahalia Jackson's reputation grew as she made numerous recordings and gained national recognition with her Carnegie Hall debut in 1950.

Jackson toured abroad and appeared on radio and at jazz festivals, refusing to sing the blues in favor of more hopeful devotional songs. In Newport, R.I., in 1958 she sang in Duke Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige.

From the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott until her death, Mahalia Jackson songs where deeply committed to and very prominent in the Civil Rights Movement.

Very close to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she often performed at his rallies--even singing an old slave spiritual before his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963. She also sang at his funeral five years later.

With such strongly embedded gospel roots, her artistry re-wrote the rules forever.

As mentioned before, Mahalia Jackson's songs of deep faith and commitment to the Lord and her passionate voice lent to the Civil Rights Movement, here are some of her more influential gospel songs from this era.:

Mahalia Jackson songs-
Move on Up a Little Higher

One these morning soon one morning
I'm gonna lay down my cross get me a crown
soon one evening late in the evening
Late in the evening I'm going home live on high
Soon as my feet strike Zion
Lay down my heavy burdens
Put on my robe in glory
Going home one day and tell my story
I've been coming over hills and mountains
Gonna drink from the Christian Fountain

You know all God's sons and daughters that mornin' now
Will drink that old healing water
And we gonna live on forever, we gonna live on forever
We gonna live on up in glory after while.
Oh Lord I'm going out sight-seeing in Beulah
March all around God's altar
Walk and never get tired
Fly Lord and never falter

I'm gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet old man Daniel
Gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet the Hebrew children
Gonna move on up a little higher
Meet Paul and Silas
Gonna meet my friends and kindred

Gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet my loving mother
I'm gonna move on up a little higher
Gonna meet the Lily of the valley
I'm gonna feast with the Rose of Sharon
It will be always howdy howdy
It will be always howdy, howdy
It will be always howdy howdy and never goodbye

Oh will you be there early one morning
Will you be there somewhere round the altar
Will you be there oh when the angels shall call the roll
God knows I'll be waiting
Yes I'll be watching somewhere on the altar
Well I'll be waiting oh at the beautiful yes golden gate
Well well soon as my feet strike Zion
Gonna lay down my heavy burden
I'm going to put on my robe in glory
I've been coming over the hills and mountains
Gonna drink from the Christian Fountain
You know all God's sons and daughters that mornin'
Will drink that old healing water
Meet me there early one morning
Meet me there somewhere on the altar
Meet me there oh when the angels shall call the roll

Mahalia Jackson songs-
I Can Put My Trust in Jesus

there are those who really see you
no matter what your trust may be

even friend.. and near of kin can be
sometime torn, there backs on me

whoa but the one
whose always listenin'

and my poor, poor condition sees
yes, I can put... all my trust in my Jesus,

Oh yes

Can He put His trust in me...?
Do I help those who are in need?

Just like Jesus, Jesus has helped me
Oh, do I give my best in service
Even though Lord, no one can see?

Well Lord, am I truly, truly Lord an example
Well what a Christian, a Christian, ought to be?

Yes I can put all my trust in my Jesus,
Oh yes, Can He put... oh my lord, His trust in me...

Mahalia Jackson Mahalia Jackson songs-
In The Upper Room

[Verse:]
In the upper room with Jesus,
sitting at His blessed feet.
Daily does my sin confessing,
begging for His mercy, sweet.

Trusting in His grace and power,
seeking there, His love in prayer.
It is then I feel the Spirit,
as I sit with Him up there.

[Chorus:]
In the upper with Jesus.
In the upper room with my Lord.
In the upper room,
in the upper room,
In The Upper Room

[Verse:]
In the upper room with Jesus,
sitting at His blessed feet.
Daily does my sin confessing,
begging for His mercy, sweet.

Trusting in His grace and power,
seeking there, His love in prayer.
It is then I feel the Spirit,
as I sit with Him up there.

[Chorus:]
In the upper with Jesus.
In the upper room with my Lord.
In the upper room,
in the upper room,

Mahalia Jackson songs-
A City Called Heaven

I am a poor pilgrim
A poor pilgrim
Of sorrow
I'm left in
This wide world
This wide world
Alone
Oh, I ain't
Got no hope
Got no hope
For tomorrow
I'm trying
To make it
Make Heaven
My home
Sometimes
I just don't know
Which way
To turn
no no
sometimes im tosing
im drive low
sometimes I just don’t no
which way
to turn
no

Ms. Jackson Mahalia Jackson songs-
When I Wake Up in Glory

I shall fall asleep someday
From this earth I'll pass away
But my soul should reach up that land

O when I sing on
I've cast faith against the host of sin prevail
I'm gonna wake
We cannot understand

O I will wake, wake, wake up yes, in glory
And with Jesus
I'll sing redemption story
I shall see His blessed sea
Yea He's kept me by His grace
When I wake up
Yes, in glory by and by

O, when I wear it
Eyes so close
And a song of sweet reborn
Singing glory hallelujah
Yes, as I call Lord
All my troubles will be gone
And I'll be free from sin at last
And I'll leave all my sorrow heavy load

One morning I'm going to wake, wake
Wake up, yes in glory
And with Jesus I'm gonna sing O redemption story
I shall see, His blessed sea
Yea, He kept me along by grace
When I wake up Yes, in glory
By and by

O when I wake, wake
Wake up yes, in glory
And with Jesus
I'm gonna sing redemption story
O Lord
I shall see God's blessed sea
Yea, he kept me along by grace
When I wake up Yes, in glory
O by and by

Mahalia Jackson songs-
I've Been Buked And I've Been Scorned

I've been buked and I've been scorned,
I've been buked and I've been scorned,
Children

I've been buked and I've been scorned,
Tryin' to make this journey all alone

You may talk about me sure as you please
Talk about me sure as you please
Children, talk about me sure as you please
Your talk will never drive me down to my knees

Jesus died to set me free
Jesus died to set me free
Children, Jesus died to set me free
Nailed to that cross on Calvary

I've been buked and I've been scorned
I've been buked and I've been scorned
Children, I've been buked and I've been scorned
Tryin' to make this journey all alone

Mahalia Mahalia Jackson songs-
How I Got Over

How I got over
How did I make it over
You know my soul look back and wonder
How did I make it over

How I made it over
Going on over all these years
You know my soul look back and wonder
How did I make it over

Tell Me how we got over 'LORD'
Had a mighty hard time coming on over
You know my soul look back and wonder
How did we make it over

Tell me how we got over 'LORD'
I've been falling and rising all these years
But you know my soul look back and wonder
How did I make it over

But, soon as I can see JESUS
The man that died for me
Man that bled and suffered
and he hung on Calvary

And I want to thank him for how he brought me
And I want to thank GOD for how he taught me
Oh thank my GOD how he kept me
I'm gonna thank him 'cause he never left me

Then I'm gonna thank GOD for 'ole time religion
and I'm gonna thank GOD for giving me a vision
One day I'm gonna join the heavenly choir
I'm gonna sing and never get tired

And then I'm gonna sing somewhere 'round GODS alter
And I'm gonna shout all my troubles over
You know I've gotta thank GOD and thank him for being
so good to me. 'LORD YEAH'

How I made it over 'LORD' I had to cry in the midnight hour
coming on over, but you know my soul look back and wonder
How did I make it over

Tell me how I made it over 'LORD GOD LORD'
Falling and rising all these years
you know my soul look back and wonder
How did I make it over

I'm gonna wear a diamond garment
In that new Jerusalem, I'm gonna walk the streets of gold
It's the homeland of the soul
I'm gonna view the host in white
They've been traveling day and night
Coming up from every nation
They're on their way to the great Cognation
Coming from the north, south, east, and west
On their way to a land of rest
and their gonna join the heavenly choir
You know we're gonna sing and never get tired
and then we're gonna sing somewhere 'round GODS alter
and then we're gonna shout all our troubles over
You know we gotta thank GOD and thank him for being
so good to me

You know I come to thank GOD this evening, I come to
thank him this evening, You know all night long
GOD kept his angels watching over me
and early this morning, early this morning
GOD told his angel GOD said 'touch her in my name'
God said 'touch her in my name'

I 'rose this morning, I 'rose this morning
I 'rose this morning, I feel like shouting
I feel like shouting, I feel like shouting
I feel like shouting, I feel like shouting
I feel like shouting, I feel like shouting
I just gotta thank GOD, I just gotta thank GOD
I just gotta thank GOD, I just gotta thank him
Thank GOD for being so good, GODS been good to me
