From A&R reps in the corporate world of record companies to music teachers, to studio engineers, to session musicians, to working at a publishing company or music library, the types of jobs are plentiful for someone seeking a career in music.
There are millions of people who study the art of Christian music for various reasons. Some want to be performing artists and thus find degree programs that head them in that direction.
Still there are others who want to work in the music or entertainment business there for their music career is much broader. So what you can do actually depends on what you want to do. .
Let's look at a couple of instances.
1. If you want to be a performer, you hopefully have studied christian music performance and done well. Your choice of music courses should definately include acting classes, dance classes and any other classes that would benefit this choice of persuit.
2.If you want to work in the entertainment business, you should probably consider a masters degree in christian music. This gives you the credentials you need to impress a prospective employer.
You can work in one of two main areas: producing or selling. Producing involves the actual creation of the work or obtaining of artists for agencies or record companies.
Selling is the other end of the business, marketing your clients or their records to prospective buyers.
3. If you want to teach christian music, acceptance into a University of Music depends upon a satisfactory academic record in public or private schools and musical proficiency in an audition.
Churches throughout the United States and the world also know the value of music and music ministry. Growing ministries place music in a central role in their evangelism, involvement, youth, education, and worship programs.
God's Word plainly commands us to "Abstain from all appearance of evil," (I Thes. 5:22) and to provide "for honest things, not only in sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men." (II Cor. 8:21). These verses, plus many others, clearly teach that whatever we do must not only be right before God, but that it must also look right and sound right before men.
Therefore, what is Christian music?
First, the words must be true to the Bible. Second, the music must not sound like or remind people of the world.
Third, the music must honor and glorify our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Name above every name!
Fourth, the musicians must be so dedicated to the Lord that they will do everything possible, including dress and music style, not to attract attention to themselves or the world but to magnify our Lord Jesus! Amen!
Overall, the advantages of a christian music education and getting a music degree depends on whether you are going into production, where you would need a production degree, teaching (best to shoot for your masters), legal, or other aspects of music the options are too numerous to name, you need a music degree.
Music truly is a universal language; when you get a music degree in any of a wide variety of music fields, you could literally work anyplace in the world.
It really is a question of finding out what piece of the music business or music teaching you might like to major in and finding the courses, not only in the tradition school form but also try a distant education degree, online music degree, an accredited music degree program, people and places that can further your music education.
So pick an area you think you'll love doing. And good luck.
